Migrations must be carefully planned to retain visibility

Developing a new, improved website is an exciting time for businesses, enabling them to showcase the best of their work and gain a competitive edge. It also represents a risk; that all the effort invested in strong organic visibility can be wasted if the process is not managed correctly.

Website migrations are a routine part of our technical team’s work, which has resulted in our mastery of the process. Involving SEO consultancy at the earliest stage allows SEO input through every phase of a new website project, ensuring that the website is designed and structured to maximise visibility. This is much more cost effective than retrofitting SEO best practices once the new website is live.

Website Migration Checklist:

Task Detail
New website guidelines New website guidelines document will be produced and sent to the client. Distinctly will go through any questions from the development/client to ensure all parties are aligned.
Benchmarking Understanding how your website currently performs enables us to prioritise further work.
Audience research and sitemap input The new site should allow for targeted pages for terms that are performing well and also allow for growth into new areas/topics.
Review of wireframes and designs of new website We ensure your new site not only looks beautiful but also conforms to Google and user experience best practices.
Production of meta data and onpage optimisation We’ll ensure all key pages are optimised around the  terms identified in the audience research.
Technical audit of development environment prior to launch We’ll review the underlying code of the website ensuring  it loads quickly, looks good on mobile and Google can crawl and index it efficiently. Remedial recommendations will be passed to your developer to implement.
Content audit Depending on the size of the website, a content audit will uncover which pages either need to be removed, consolidated or improved in time for the new website launch.
Production of redirect map URLs that are currently generating traffic or have external links pointing to them will be mapped to relevant pages on the new website.
Full tracking set up Configuration of Google Analytics to track all key performance indicators as per the needs of your business.
Post launch audit We’ll give the website a final review once live to ensure everything is as it should be and there are no areas for concern.
Link reclamation Identifying a number of links pointing to the old site structure which require updating. Reclaiming authority after a website migration is a valuable activity.

If you’re looking to launch a new site and want to maintain or boost your current performance, Distinctly can provide solutions either as stand-alone projects or as a part of ongoing SEO consultancy.
