Why Reddit deserves a place in your PR strategy
In the digital PR world, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how the brands we represent appear in the press. Are (and how are) journalists covering the stories we pitch to them? Are readers of our target publications getting a positive look at our brands? But have we focused enough on how customers talk about brands?
Key takeaways:
Reddit is becoming increasingly important for organic PR, SEO and AI search visibility, with its discussions appearing prominently in Google search results and LLM-generated answers.
To build a successful Reddit PR strategy, brands should
- Identify relevant subreddits where target audiences discuss products and brands
- Monitor Reddit conversations to uncover customer insights and emerging trends
- Build brand credibility through authentic engagement
- Integrate Reddit into your wider organic strategy to strengthen brand visibility and support LLM visibility
- Measure Reddit PR success through brand mentions, sentiment, rankings and AI citations
Organic PR is no longer just about securing coverage
Reddit is increasingly becoming relevant to how an average consumer moves through their purchasing journey. With over 130 million active users on Reddit every day, people are increasingly turning to its threads and discussions as a source of information and real human opinion.
So it’s no surprise that when people want recommendations or comparisons for products, they turn to community-driven spaces, led by people who are real ‘engagers’ with a discussion around your niche (or your brand itself). Organic PR teams need to evolve from focusing predominantly on where a brand is featured and focus more on how it is discussed.
Approaching Reddit strategically opens up a massive opportunity for your organic strategy. Rushing into it opens up the same number of risks for your brand if not done carefully.

Why Reddit matters more than ever for organic visibility
Reddit’s growing presence in Google search
Discussions and forums are now featuring in the SERPs for more and more informational queries, with Reddit, unsurprisingly, being the most cited domain, showing up in 87.8% of SERPs. Reddit’s share of Google’s Top 3 positions also rose to 10.24% after the May 2026 core update. That’s up from 8.56% after March, with the number of keywords where Reddit holds the #1 spot jumping 54% between March and May.
For brands who are competing for visibility at the research and consideration stage of the purchasing journey, and for the PR teams representing them, finding and maintaining a presence across Reddit is quickly becoming a must-have, more than a nice-to-have.
Reddit’s influence on AI search
Beyond the SERPs, Reddit discussions are now contributing more when it comes to Google AIOs, ChatGPT, and other LLM platforms. Spotlighting Reddit as the second most-cited website in Google AI Overviews, Ahrefs shows us the reality of where Reddit is sitting against other domains.
That said, although a Reddit thread being cited by an AI tool and a brand being recommended within an AI answer are connected, they are not interchangeable. A brand can rank well and secure high-quality editorial links, but still be absent from the LLM recommendations shaping actual customer perception.
How to successfully integrate Reddit into your organic strategy
Step 1: Find the communities that matter
Before even attempting to build a presence on Reddit, let alone convert customers from the platform, brands need to spend some time getting a lay of the land.
Research relevant subreddits based on target customer interests, search behaviours, niche industry topics, and purchasing history. All of this helps narrow your scope and lets you target the discussions and communities with the most genuine interest in your brand’s niche.
Community relevance trumps standard metrics like subscriber counts or number of posts, comments or likes. Brands and their PR teams should be looking at the quality of the discussions they are researching rather than the quantity. Are people asking genuine questions? Are they seeking recommendations? Are they sharing experiences and comparing products? Brands want to be present in subreddits that offer valuable insights and opportunities for your brand to contribute to.
Top tip: You can use Google search to find existing Reddit threads relevant to your client’s industry. For example:
- site:reddit.com/r/Supplements “sensitive stomach”
- site:reddit.com/r/Shoes “school shoes”
Step 2: The audience listening stage
Once the right subreddits have been found, time needs to be spent understanding what it really is that potential customers are discussing. This is a great opportunity to look for:
- Recurring questions
- Pain points
- Misconceptions around your brand
- Product comparisons
- Emerging trends or discussions
This stage of setting up a Reddit presence can also prove very useful for wider organic PR strategies. Recurring Reddit conversations could be the perfect starting point for campaign ideation. Topics that are already being actively discussed within your niche lay the foundations for a campaign that those similar users would want to engage with.
Step 3: Become part of the conversation, not just an advert
The traditional approach of distributing brand-led content to the press doesn’t translate to Reddit and could be the first obstacle in creating a successful Reddit presence.
Brands will be most successful if they can contribute to existing subreddits through genuine expertise, transparent representation, relevant advice, and most importantly, non-promotional answers.
If you want to engage with communities, it’s important to find out as much information as you can from the subreddit MODs – the people in charge. What are the rules? What can/can’t you say? Is there an appetite for content and comments from brands? Let them know what your intentions are. The secret is dropping the corporate tone and showing them you want to be a part of their community, not take over it.
If your Reddit strategy begins with finding ways to drop links into conversations, you’re probably approaching it the wrong way.
Step 4: Build credibility before expecting visibility
Before brands and PRs can expect to have visibility on their target subreddits, it’s important that they understand the value of sustained engagement and building trust.
Posting from a brand profile and, more specifically, as a person from the brand (e.g. ‘Tom from Distinctly’) is much more effective than engaging as an anonymous user. It helps disarm communities that are already fairly suspicious of new users and humanises your brand to the point where existing users will trust you.
Step 5: Integrate Reddit into your wider organic strategy
Once you’ve been able to build up a bit more of a trusted presence on Reddit, the opportunities are endless. The platform can be used for:
- Ideation (as I mentioned above)
- Topical authority, through the use of AMAs (Ask Me Anything)
- Brand messaging, painting the picture of your brand that you want potential customers to see
- Reputation management, by engaging directly and transparently with worried or angry customers
- Competitor analysis, to find gaps in niche subreddits that your brand can integrate into
- Audience research
Building a Reddit presence doesn’t work in silos. While it has its direct benefits, feeding it into a wider organic strategy is where digital PR teams will find the most value for their clients.
Can Reddit really improve your brand’s AI visibility?
As we discussed above, relevant, credible discussions on Reddit can often become sources for AI-generated responses, helping a brand appear in contexts beyond its own website.
That said, getting mentioned on Reddit doesn’t automatically mean your brand will be recommended by ChatGPT or other LLM platforms. AI search systems use different retrieval and citation approaches, and the visibility of Reddit content changes over time.
This is why Reddit should feed into your organic strategy as a piece of the pie, rather than the be-all and end-all. The value of taking part effectively in subreddits shouldn’t be reduced to engineering mentions in LLM answers. If the Reddit strategy is strong enough, LLM visibility should come as a natural, secondary benefit.
In fact, there are countless examples of brands attempting to manipulate Reddit conversations for AI visibility, creating concern from moderators and existing users about covert brand promotion. Ultimately, although there may be some short-term perks to this, the longer-term impact will be negative.
How should brands measure success on Reddit?
Instead of measuring success purely through posts, upvotes or direct website traffic from Reddit, tracking a combination of indicators will give you the best gauge of how Reddit is impacting your brand’s overall organic success.
- Brand visibility, including brand mentions and frequency of discussion
- Sentiment around your brand in existing subreddits
- The quality of replies and interactions around your brand
- Relevant Reddit threads ranking for priority queries in the SERPs
- Brand recommendations and Reddit citations across relevant LLM prompts
- Visits and conversions directly from Reddit.
