Distinctly has been involved with the Rickmansworth food bank for a number of years – both volunteering and donating – to support our wider community. The food bank is run by a truly inspirational local lady, Iris Bangs, who has continued to work tirelessly throughout the pandemic to ensure that families in hardship are in a position to provide food and basic necessities for their children. Sadly the other services that they provide – lunch club, debt counselling, mental health support – have been put on hold which is a massive loss as social issues such as loneliness, poverty and mental health are so closely linked.
The Covid pandemic has caused massive hardship across the country and many, who have never before needed the support of these services, have found themselves in a position where their income has evaporated and they are reliant on the food bank to get them through the week. The food bank has seen an increase in demand but, encouragingly, Iris has also had very strong support and has reported that their food stocks are high. The biggest need is in fact for hygiene products which are often in demand yet not so widely donated.
Distinctly has donated a substantial amount of nappies, children’s toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo, body wash, deodorant and sanitary products to help meet that need. Period poverty is something that has been well documented and it was important that this Christmas (or at any time of the year) no female has to cope without such basic essentials.
Very few businesses have been untouched by the turbulence and challenging circumstances of this year, however, as a business, we wanted to do something positive to help those less fortunate. Hopefully, 2021 will bring more hope and positivity both to our local community and across the country.
